Meditation
In Unity, we understand and teach that Life is a creative process, to be lived from within-out. Meditation as a mental practice is also a spiritual process that centers the practitioner, uniting humankind’s three planes of existence: Spirit, soul, and body. It is a yielding of the desire to “do,” to “go” somewhere, and to simply rest in the Presence of pure Being, effortlessly.
We let go of any objects we may be carrying in our hands, and we release any mental clutter and bothersome thoughts we may be carrying in our minds. The invitation, always, is to concentrate one’s thoughts at the Center of their being – to focus inward, at the point of oneself that is God (or, “the Christ”) being expressed, and to bask in the tranquility of the Silence.
Some Suggested Steps to Creating a Meditation Practice?
- Try to select a regular time for your meditation.
- Sit upright in a comfortable chair or cushion, wearing comfortable clothing.
- Begin by concentrating on your breathing.
- When you are ready to turn your attention inward, shift your attention to your special phrase, such as “I AM.”
- Empty your mind of all thoughts except your special words. As thoughts come, observe them and allow them to pass through.
- Expect nothing. Don’t worry about how you are doing.
- When finished, take time to savor the experience.
